Tara Gentry's Story
On Saturday 16th September at 11.50am I will be swimming 2 miles (128 standard pool lengths) in a lake, in Hyde park, for a charity called The Charlton Upbeats. It’s a London Classics Event and there will be celebs participating as well as loads of street food stands and fun stuff for afterwards.
I met the Upbeats a couple of years ago on a sponsored walk and they’re a great bunch. Really friendly and accepting.
About 1,000 babies are born with Down’s Syndrome each year. This basically means that they are born with an extra chromosome. Playing sports gives people that have Down’s Syndrome the chance to learn physical skills. It also gives them the chance to be a part of a team to develop social and emotional abilities. Charlton Athletic set the team up and there are 170 registered from age 5 to 16, and 40 regular weekly attendees. . First and foremost the session is to learn football, have fun and socially interact. The older team members also compete in football tournaments and fixtures arranged by the Down Syndrome Association and other various pan-disability leagues. They are 9 times National Down’s Syndrome champions and they play hard – believe me, I’ve had the opportunity to play with them!
I chose this charity because they’re a small local charity where the money won’t get lost in thousands of events and donations. I phoned them and asked if I could do this because I believe that it will make a real difference to them.
I'd love it of you came down to cheer us all on!
